The follow-on to our San Antonio SBIR/STTR workshop is set for Thursday, January 19th at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center in Austin. The Texas SBIR/STTR Summit & Conference, in partnership with the Office of the Governor and the Texas Workforce Commission, aims to more than double the state’s share of federal research dollars going into Texas small businesses this decade.

Texas Foundation for Innovative Communities
has put together a very comprehensive summit -- the "capstone" in pursuing a winning SBIR/STTR proposal. The event is the largest and only SBIR/STTR conference in Texas to provide direct access to federal program managers, which are critical decision-makers in awarding grants.

Participants of the conference will have the opportunity to hear directly from various agencies about their pressing technical needs and will learn the best practices in winning SBIR and STTR awards directly from national experts who have helped companies obtain more than $240 million in SBIR/STTR grants. The conference will also feature a tutorial on the Department of Energy (DOE) $400 million ARPA-E energy research grants program.

Hear directly from program managers from the biggest granting agencies about their pressing technical needs. Promote your firm's technologies and capabilities. Meet federal prime contractors, investors, peer mentors, university partners, and other resources to assist you in a winning SBIR/STTR proposal.

Ray Friesenhahn, Techlink, who served as our San Antonio featured speaker will moderate. Other guests include:
  • Cynthia Gonsalves, former Director, Office of Technology Transition, Office of the Secretary of Defense

  • Jonathan Taylor, Texas Emerging Technology Fund, Office of the Governor

  • Rick Shindell, SBIR Gateway - Updates and Implications of SBIR Reauthorization

  • Oliver Murphy, CEO, Lynntech, College Station

  • Tim Wittig, Principal, Technology Management Advisors, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)

Presentations by Program Managers (in-person and live via interactive video), featuring:

– Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, NASA

Great News!

SBIR/STTR Programs have been extended for another six years!

President Obama signed a bill reauthorizing the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs last week.

“We are relieved that congress has finally passed a key piece of legislation where funding has been in limbo through a series of 14 continuing resolutions.  The SBIR/STTR program is key element in innovation/technology based small business growth.”  said Jim Poage, President and CEO of Startech Foundation.  “Texas now needs to pick up the pace in terms of submitting competitive ideas.  Texas ranks 9th in the US in National Institute of Health SBIR award dollars and 28th in overall bid success rates, falling behind states such as North Dakota, Tennessee, Kansas and Idaho.”

According to Karen Mills, SBA Official, “This new, long-term reauthorization provides certainty and stability for the small businesses that leverage these programs to create jobs.  In fact, it strengthens SBIR and STTR, providing more funding for small businesses to drive innovation, create jobs, and grow our economy...” Read more
